The Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM) recently awarded scholarships to three women already in the maintenance field and two to recent graduates from a training school. These scholarships were made available through the generosity of current corporate members of AWAM. Pratt and Whitney, United Airlines and Northrop Rice USA are the sponsors for the scholarships which included the training courses, transportation and accommodations , respectively. Marcia Buckingham, President of AWAM, said in her letter to potential recipients, " By offering these scholarships, these members are sharing AWAM's goal of helping women in aviation maintenance. They are committed to promoting a healthy working environment for all, though education and cooperation."

The five recipients are: Katie Heurmann, Chinook Air, CO; Lori Gardner, Executive Aviation, Sharon Riffle, American Airlines, Brittany Bass, TX, and Marcellia Johnson, GA. The latter two winners are recent A& P school graduates. Heurmann has completed her training course and Gardner is scheduled for February. The others are still to schedule their choice of courses. These Pratt and Whitney training scholarships will enable these women to further their careers and give them the opportunity to broaden their maintenance knowledge.
